Sam enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard in July of 2010. Prior to his enlistment he was a Journeyman Electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Sam at that point in his life was at a crossroads. He spent his life up to that point lacking ambition, discipline, and purpose. Early in 2010 one of Sam’s closest friends had chosen to answer a higher calling by joining the National Guard. This inspired Sam to follow suit and join up. In late October of 2010 he shipped off to Basic at Ft. Benning, GA and began a new path in life.
For the next eight years Sam would serve in 2-20th Special Forces Group as an enlisted soldier working in their logistics section. During this time, he would deploy to Bahrain to work alongside multiple branches in Joint Special Operations mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. From 2018 to 2022 Sam would serve in Special Operations Detachment South and deploy to Kuwait and Jordan with the SOD-S to support Operation Inherent Resolve. In that deployment Sam served as the Supply NCO/SME (Subject Matter Expert) for HQ Special Operations Joint Task Force – Levant in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Camp Xiphos, Jordan. Sam currently is the Supply NCO for 66th Troop Command in Jackson, MS.
Sam has participated in numerous joint training exercises with partner nations in Central and South America. He has also successfully completed some of the most sought-after schools in the Army to include Airborne School, Air Assault School, and Pathfinder School. Sam’s highest military decorations and awards are as follows: Joint Service Commendation, Joint Service Achievement, Army Achievement Medal, and the Mississippi Commendation Medal.
Sam sought to join 5th Squad not only because of its mission, but also because of the camaraderie that is found within the organization. One of Sam’s favorite sayings is “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Sam sees the embodiment of that quote in 5th Squad.
Sam spends his free time with his family on their family land, enjoying time with his friends, taking care of his two dogs, Buddy and Buster. He also helps his counties’ Baptist Association in helping those in need by building wheelchair ramps or anything else needed.
